We Are The Fury

Venus

(EastWest)

Record Review by Marcel Feldmar

The Venus press release starts out by quoting Entertainment Weekly – saying I should think Guns ‘N Roses meets Bowie…. And then ends by saying I shouldn’t overanalyze the album. I think opening with an Entertainment Weekly quote cries out for some analysis, but perhaps that’s just me. First impressions are of a band that’s trying to just go for that Velvet Goldmine '70s glam-rock thing, but taking it into a bit harder of a rock vibe while mixing up the androgynous punk and glam dress codes because either they’re trying to make a statement or they didn’t do their fashion research. What it seems like is a well done rock album that might be trying to move in a new direction – instead of taking on the sounds and styles of bands like Wire and Gang of Four, We Are The Fury move to the Roxy Music and throw in some Sweet and Slade… hell with being a hot new band that rips off the past like the Bravery or Franz Ferdinand or Interpol or the Killers, although there is a little of that Killers swagger in here, let’s rip off a different past! But the Fury plays with fury, and I can definitely appreciate that. There are a few ballady moments that move like some musical movie outtake – Phantom of the Paradise, Rocky Horror, and back to the Velvet Goldmine reference. It’s a well done new look at an old sound, and if these boys continue rockin’ – more power to them.
