Every Move A Picture
Heart = Weapon
(V2)
Record Review by Amber Henson
After reading up about Every Move a Picture, I got the idea that I was supposed to very impressed by their lyrics. My problem was that I couldn’t understand the lyrics; I guess I don’t speak punk. I definitely got the sense that there was something desperate being told to me in the songs, but that’s how a lot of punk songs are. There is always something very pressing happening, even if it’s just the singer communicating to us that we need to dance faster. Apparently, here we’re being told about how out political situation is particularly upsetting. I’m sure I would agree with what he’s saying if I could understand him.
Well, even if I couldn’t nod along with the lyrics, I was enjoying the music. Every Move a Picture sounds like the Sex Pistols combined with Franz Ferdinand and South. Like, if you took The Killers and slapped them around a bit and told them to start acting more serious.
Singer/guitarist Brent Messenger definitely has that ‘80s-sounding voice down cold. On some songs, he gives us that frightened, shaky falsetto, at other times he sounds positively distressed and then on the next track he sounds confident. Every Move a Picture sound very British, which is why, I would imagine, they toured in the UK before this album, their debut, came out. They would blend very well with everything else that gets played in Britpop clubs.
This band definitely has the potential to make it big. With the release of this album, the press that they’re getting overseas and here at home (particularly from their hometown of San Francisco), and the chance to tour with some big name bands, they have all the makings of a band about to explode. So get on the bandwagon early, and then feel proud when you can say to your friends, “Yeah, Every Move a Picture, I’ve known them forever.” |
