Arrows
Knives Are Falling from The Sky
(Ford Plant)
Record Review by Alexis Roberts
The first song on Knives Are Falling From the Sky by Canadian duo Arrows is deceiving. It’s not very good. The lopsided off kilter melody of "Here In Time" really missed the mark. However, the rest of Knives happens to be a rather impressive collection of music from this band. A real pleasant surprise.
The music that Arrows has created is punchy rock and roll. Somewhat following in the footsteps of everyone’s favorite rock duo The White Stripes, Ryan Stanley fronts and plays guitar while Jackie sings back up vocals and plays the drums. And dare I say they give the Stripes a run for their money.
The progression of the CD is amazing as it gets better and better the deeper into it you get. The main issue here is the lack of production quality. The songs which seem heavily inspired by rock music of the early 1990s (but honestly who isn’t digging on the 90s right now?) are good, and the lo-fi grunge vibe is apparent, but having noticeable mic feed interrupting your songs on a recording is much different (and not necessarily a good thing) than having that feedback at a live show.
I would advise everyone to keep an eye on Arrows in the future. They seem to be headed down the path toward popularity, especially if they keep writing these damn catchy songs. Nobody is going to be able to deny them.
